Taking an Inventory of Your Team’s Spiritual Health

If you’re anything like me, you find ministry leadership to be exhilarating. Even the difficult things are great opportunities to point people to Jesus. You’re the person who knows the mission and has a clear vision for where you want to go and how to get there.

But, if we’re honest, it’s also a mixed blessing…

On one hand you’re thrilled to invite others to join you, to partner in kingdom work and share life together, but that also means you’re always asking folks to give, sacrifice and serve; not a bad thing, but we need balance.


I love inviting people to visit camp; to stop by for a meal or spend the day with us. It gives them the opportunity to see Arrowhead in action and for us to connect. It also gives them a chance to pull away from their normal routines, relationships and surroundings. The best part, is when they visit they don’t have be a pastor or leader. They are just Joe Schmoe or Sally Somebody. There’s no event planning, sermon prep, counseling session or paperwork… just good food and no agenda. I am always amazed at how God uses that offering of time and space to create healthiness.

As ministry leaders we are charged with the balanced soul care of our volunteers. It’s a combination of asking and giving, invitation and permission, challenge and encouragement.

Caring well for your Volunteers

How do you give to your ministry leaders and volunteers? Do they have permission to be healthy as they serve in your ministry? Are you encouraging them to care for their own souls? And while we are at it… how about asking those same questions of yourself!

Let’s use The R-Inventory to explore and evaluate ways to give permission and encourage your volunteers to be healthy.

  • Rest – giving volunteers a Wednesday night off to spend with their family or in the main service.
  • Relaxation – giving volunteers the opportunity to enjoy a student ministry service, gathering or event without leadership responsibility.
  • Retreat – encouraging your volunteers to go on a personal or family retreat.
  • Refresh – spend time reading scripture together, praying with and praying for your volunteers.
  • Rhythm – giving your volunteers permission to adjust their commitment when they’re lives need a new rhythm to be healthy.
  • Refocus – sending your volunteers an article you’ve read or a copy of a book you’re reading.
  • Renew – encouraging volunteers to attend retreats, seminars or conferences with other ministries.

Some questions to reflect on:

  1. As you lead, how many of these R’s describe how you care for the souls of your volunteers?
  2. Which R is missing or most needed by your volunteers?
  3. Which R is your strongest; your weakest?

The R’s in Action

At camp we relentlessly beat the drum of healthiness in ministry. It’s critical because are ministry context is non-stop, 24/7 for three months straight in the summer. Of course, student ministry has a different rhythm to it… but your volunteers are serving before events, during services, clean up, follow up and off site. And that’s on top of their responsibilities at home and work. I bet you they would describe it much like I do camping ministry.


One of our strongest R’s here at camp is Rest. Each day at camp we carve out specific time for our staff to be healthy. We call it Intentional Space. The goal is to take into consideration all the ways they have been serving, giving and caring for our campers (all of which is worship) and then give them space to continue worshipping God in a healthy way. That could be solo time with no agenda. Sometimes it means studying scripture, praying together or gathering in small groups. It includes journaling, writing, creativity and even taking a nap.

We have found it vital to have a staff member dedicated to the role of “staff discipler”, someone who is charged with leading, guiding, facilitating and encouraging our staff to be healthy as they serve at camp. Have you ever considered having a volunteer(s) dedicated to the healthiness of your volunteers and students?

Ben Myers has served as the Camp Director at Arrowhead Bible Camp in Brackney, PA for the past 13 years. Arrowhead is a ministry committed to discipleship through its programs for adults with developmental disabilities, missions opportunities for youth groups, and mentoring of High School and College students. Ben also teaches as an adjunct professor at Lancaster Bible College and holds degrees from Cairn University and Baptist Bible Seminary.
