A coaching cohort is a small group of 6 to 8 youth workers who gather together for the purpose of encouraging, supporting, and teaching each other. Each cohort has a facilitator who leads the group and takes on the role of coach. Cohorts are designed to invite youth workers into a conversation about the key questions of youth ministry – everything from the day-to-day “how to’s” to the larger issues of ministry strategy.
Each session of the cohort is a guided discussion led by the coach that encourages group members to explore ideas and solutions from a variety of youth ministry contexts. Cohorts serve as a safe environment in which you can be equipped, share ideas, and strategize about your ministry.
Coaching cohorts meet 3 to 4 times over about a four month period in time. If you join one, you’re only committing to a few meetings over the span of a few months, not locking into a life-long commitment. This isn’t like a cell phone contract or anything.
Specific times and locations for meeting are determined by the coach when the group first meets to get to know one other. Coaches will some key topics for discussion at each of the meetings, and open up the discussion for youth workers to discuss specific issues they may be facing within their own ministry setting. Multiple cohorts are available throughout the year, often running in a semester format.
Most full-time youth workers are often the only person on their church staff focused on youth ministry, and only a small percentage have the opportunity to do ministry with a full-time youth team. It’s not uncommon to feel as if there’s no one easily accessible with whom they can talk about age-specific ministry. The coaching cohort is a perfect opportunity to connect with other youth workers in your region looking to dialogue about youth ministry and grow as youth leaders. It’s a perfect fit for the youth worker who is looking for a team with which they can process ministry related questions.
Regardless of your ministry context, being part of a group committed to seeing you and your ministry succeed is always an encouraging thing!
